In addition to NEODA celebrating the 10th anniversary of National Fish & Chip Day this year, we also see the 10th anniversary of Great British Pea Week, with celebrations commencing from 7th – 13th July 2025.

What is Great British Pea Week?
The purpose of Great British Pea Week is to increase the understanding and awareness of the heritage of peas. Launched by Yes Peas! in 2015, Great British Pea Week is celebrated annually and recognises the large industry effort.
Full of Nutrition
Whilst recognising the large industry effort, this highlights success such as the production of 2 billion peas for the UK market and beyond each year!
Important information such as the fact that peas go from field to freezer in under 150 minutes, locking in the freshness and nutrients, is also acknowledged.
On the topic of nutrition, English peas are packed with nutrients like Vitamins A and B, along with calcium, iron, zinc, and potassium - and they count as one of your five-a-day! While most of the peas we see today come from supermarket freezers, fresh peas can also be enjoyed raw.
Beyond the familiar frozen bags tucked in our freezers, peas are a classic side dish, especially when served alongside fish and chips.
Mushy Peas for Fish & Chips
Mushy peas are made using dried marrowfat peas that are best soaked overnight, then slowly cooked and seasoned. Although peas have been eaten since the 1700s, mushy peas didn’t become widely popular until the 1970s, especially in Northern England.
Today, mushy peas are a familiar sight in chip shops across the UK, as well as in pubs and restaurants. They’ve become one of the most iconic sides in the fish and chip world!
Their popularity in chippies is just one of the reasons we’re shining a spotlight on them during Great British Pea Week!
How can you get involved in Great British Pea Week?
There are a variety of ways you can get involved in Great British Pea Week to celebrate its 10th anniversary, with a few suggestions made by Yes Peas! themselves.
One way to get involved is to get cooking! Another reason why we love peas is because of their versatility and how they can be used in a starter, main, side, or even just a snack – so many possible reci-peas!
As a fish & chip shop owner, a great way to celebrate and to get involved could be to offer a limited-time promotion on your mushy peas – encouraging more business and general engagement.
Another great way to get involved is to spread the awareness on social media. This can be done by using hashtags such as #GreatBritishPeaWeek or #GBPW. Consider posting your pea inspired dishes or promotions, and you may bring your shop some free publicity with a repost from Yes Peas! We'd also love to see your pictures and be able to give you a mention ourselves so don't forget to tag Friars Pride.
