The Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative
The Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative was created to advocate for sustainable palm oil.
Traditionally, palm oil has had negative connotations and with good reason. Irresponsibly sourced palm oil has led to the destruction of wildlife habitats, animal displacement, and human exploitation.
However, RSPO emphasises that completely boycotting the use of palm oil is unsustainable. The only way forward is to only use sustainable palm oil.
RSPO argues that given palm oil's popularity, it is difficult to boycott the use of palm oil. Switching to other oils would not decrease the potentially harmful impacts of palm oil. Instead, using oils such as sunflower or rapeseed on the same scale as we do palm oil would require more land to produce an equivalent amount.
Sustainable palm oil means it halts deforestation and protects wildlife and the environment.
As a result, the Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative focuses on promoting the use of sustainable palm oil in the UK. They say that ‘by choosing to buy and sell products that contain sustainable palm oil, you are increasing demand and helping to protect wildlife and habitats.’
The Sustainable Palm Oil Community
By being an ambassador, you can use your voice to promote change regarding sustainable palm oil and encourage others to do the same. The plight for sustainable palm oil is incredibly important as it protects wildlife, farmers and local communities, and fights climate change.

Friars Pride, along with the Q Partnership, are proud national ambassadors for the Sustainable Palm Oil Communities.
All of the palm oil we sell at Friars Pride is RSPO certified from fully segregated sources. This ensures that all our palm oil is traceable back to the mill and plantations and is deforestation-free.
As suppliers to the fish and chip industry, we are conscious that palm oil is one of the most popular frying mediums used by our customers. This is why a commitment to sustainable palm oil is so critical for the longevity of our industry.
Becoming an ambassador
By becoming an ambassador, it is a great opportunity to give back to the world, especially considering the fish and chip industry are huge users of palm oil.
The scheme is led by Chester Zoo and the main responsibilities of an ambassador are:
- Spread awareness of Chester Zoo Sustainable Palm Oil Communities and increase demand for sustainable palm oil across UK
- Spread awareness of mission and encourage businesses to make the change from unsustainable to sustainable palm oil.
- Protect wildlife and habitats over the world

- Become part of their network of ambassadors to spread awareness of the benefits of palm oil and to use sustainable palm.
- Help protect the future of palm, the wildlife, and the planet by committing to using sustainable palm as a cooking medium.
- Use of the ‘Sustainable Palm Oil’ logo to promote your shop as part of the project.
- Take part in group meetings with fellow ambassadors.
- Attend virtual and in-person events at Chester Zoo and at partnered communities.
- Receive updates, messaging, and industry knowledge around sustainable palm oil.
