The UK’s top mobile fish and chip businesses have been revealed today (Wednesday 30 August) as part of the 30th anniversary National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.
Following initial judging, three operators – Including Friars Pride customer StarChip Enterprise in Worcestershire, The Little Fishy in Tyne and Wear, and The Sizzling Squid in Shropshire – have been shortlisted for the Best Mobile Fish and Chip Operator Award, one of 15 categories in the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards – aptly known as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish and chip industry.
The 2016 Mobile Operator of the Year winners, StarChip Enterprise, are a fantastic mobile operator covering the local area around Evesham as well as catering for many events and festivals, including this year’s British Summer Time at Hyde Park.
To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, the businesses have been appraised across a wide range of judging criteria, including sustainable sourcing policies, staff training processes and marketing activities.
Over the coming weeks the shops will face further judging in the form of mystery dining inspections, before the winner is announced at the prestigious awards ceremony in London on 25 January 2018.
Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, said: “We’re seeing a new generation of mobile fish and chip units pop-up around the country with innovative operators seizing new trends and opportunities, such as the provision of catering facilities to the wedding market.
“Mobile catering is far from new, but improved food offerings have brought a new lease of life to the sector – something the fish and chip industry is capitalising on.
“Running a successful mobile business is no easy feat, and requires a great deal of commitment and passion in order to succeed, but our finalists hit the mark perfectly. All three businesses showcase the innovation of the mobile catering sector while still retaining the traditions of our quintessentially British meal, fish and chips.”
Award sponsor Colin Heathfield, Head of Foodservice and International Sales at Pukka Pies Limited, said: “Mobile fish and chip shops are classically British and this year’s finalists reflect the creativity and innovation of this fine tradition.
“We wish them all our warmest congratulations and all the best for the final.”
The winner of the Best Mobile Fish and Chip Operator Award will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 30th anniversary ceremony in London on 25 January 2018.
