HEINZ ESTD 1869. Henry J. Heinz began the classic tastes Heinz are famous for today over 150 years ago at his parent’s home in Pittsburgh, USA. Beginning with a grated horseradish using his mother’s recipe, Henry grew the on a patch of garden given to him by his father. Bottling the horseradish in a clear glass to display it’s purity and quality whereas most companies used brown glass to obscure the inferior quality of their product.

In 1876 Heinz Tomato Ketchup first appeared on US shelves, originally called ‘Catsup’. A born innovator Henry created a whole series of new products and by 1896 he sold over 60 products. Inspired by a show company advertising 21 styles of show Henry created the iconic ’57 varieties’ slogan. Why 57 isn’t known for sure but whatever the reason it has stuck!
