The National Fish and Chip Awards 2017 are almost here!
With the National Fish and Chip Awards 2017 just weeks away, what can we expect from the ‘Oscars’ of the Fish and Chip industry?
On Thursday 29th January the red carpet will be rolled out and the music will play, as the 29th annual celebration of all things Fish and Chips begins at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.
This homage to the Great British tradition of Fish and Chips will be the culmination of a year long trawl by judges who have cast their nets far and wide to find the best of the best of the Fish and Chip industry. Many fish friers’ hearts are set to make or break when the awards are announced by the voice of food and drink on BBC Radio’s drive time show, Nigel Barden.
Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, comments: “Fish and chips are a true British icon, it’s our undisputed national dish. The crispy battered flakes of fish and piping-hot chips are an inspired combination that has been loved by many generations before us, and will remain at our finger tips for generations to come.
“The fish and chip trade continues to go from strength to strength and it’s only fitting that we celebrate the hard-working, passionate friers behind some of the country’s best fish and chip businesses. They proudly uphold the high standards of our industry and help us to reinforce the UK’s reputation as the home of the world’s best fish and chips.”
Similar to the fish and chip trade, the National Fish and Chip Awards has also gone from strength to strength, growing from a single category back in 1988, to now over a dozen categories in its 29th year. These categories span a diverse range of accolades that cater for every aspect of running a successful Fish and Chip business, recognising everything from traditional takeaways to mobile operators and from young fish friers to excellence in staff training and responsible sourcing.
The most hotly contested category is the flagship Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, with the eventual winner going on to being named the ‘best Fish and Chip takeaway’ in the UK.
All points of the compass have been reached with the flagship Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award across its 28 winners. Ranging from The Halfway Fish Bar in Dorset in south west England, to The Bay in Aberdeenshire in north east Scotland and Petrou Brother in Cambridgeshire, eastern England to Frankie’s Fish & Chips in far flung Shetland!
