Will there be a plastic bag charge for Fish and Chip shops and other Takeaways?

From Monday 5th October, consumers in England will be charged at least 5p for some of the carrier bags they receive to carry home the goods that they have purchased. So will there be a plastic bag charge for Fish and Chip shops?

Will my business have to charge for bags?

The good news is the legislation applies to employers that employ over 250 full-time equivalent employees (in total and not just in retail roles) full details on this are available here. Therefore, will not apply to the majority of fish and chip, fast food and similar takeaways, meaning it is unlikely there will be a plastic bag charge for Fish and Chip shops. Also, ‘chips, or food sold in containers not secure enough to prevent leakage during normal handling’ do not need to be charged for – read more here.

My business is/part of a chain/franchise – will I have to charge?

For example, if you own 10 stores in a symbol group and have more than 250 employees in total, you will have to induce a plastic bag charge in your Fish and Chip shop chain. But if you’re part of a symbol group and own 2 stores with 15 employees, you don’t have to charge – examples via Gov.uk. However, the same rule applies of ‘chips, or food sold in containers not secure enough to prevent leakage during normal handling’ do not need to be charged for – read more here.
