Ship Deck – Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year
Located in the Welsh village Trethomas, Caerphilly, Ship Deck is now celebrating the success of earning the crown of the Best Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year in the UK. They are now not only Captains of their own ‘ship’ but of the fish and chip industry as well!In February of this year, the National Fish and Chip Awards were held by the NFFF in London to see businesses batter it out to be crowned the best in the fish and chip industry. The night saw winners for various categories which can be found in more detail here. One category in particular saw Ship Deck win the Takeaway of the Year category.
Friars Pride had the pleasure of personally speaking with Ship Deck directly about their win, read on to find out what they had to say.
Ship Deck’s Journey to Success
Ship Deck is no stranger to success, with the owner Ryan having previously won DryWite Young Fish Frier in 2016. When asked what he thought made them stand out as winners for Takeaway of the Year, they said there were a few key differences. They said that in comparison to the Drywite award where it was looking at the individual, this time there was an emphasis on the overall business. In their application, they emphasised their passion for the industry and the meal itself, to the quality of the products they use, as well as the wellbeing of their team.
Ship Deck also told us how their business not only focuses on fish and chips, as is customary (given this is 90% of their sales), but also on trying new products. In particular, exploring vegan products and offering a variety of sausages and pies. Their diverse offerings means that they can cater beyond the traditional dish, and to more customers.
The Red Dragon Is Here to Stay
As a Welsh business winning Takeaway of the Year, there was more to this victory than the average celebration. In fact, we haven’t seen Wales in the Fish and Chip Awards for over 20 years!Ship Deck told us how it felt amazing to put Wales on the map for quality fish and chips with their win, and that it created a ‘buzz’ not only in their community, but also in Wales itself!
As a result of their win, people have travelled far and wide to visit the Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year, emphasising that the award is here to stay.
Ship Deck also revealed that even one month later, their high numbers of orders and customers have still not dropped off. Even their usual 100 bags of potatoes are now up to 180 to satisfy hungry customers that want to try their award-winning fish and chips.
However, they also told us that the key to business, are their regulars. Without them, they couldn’t have dreamed to win such a prestigious award.
What is on the Horizon for Ship Deck?
Ship Deck’s plans for the future doesn’t just involve keeping up their incredibly high standards and delivering amazing fish and chips, but also more industry involvement. They hope to become more involved in the fish and chip industry. With their expertise and success, they hope to increase industry standards, and help other businesses reach new heights of success.
Overall, Ship Deck has highlighted that high quality and high standards are what will propel a business to success.
Here at Friars Pride, we couldn’t be more pleased that such a fantastic takeaway with such dedication to high quality goods, standards and training has won the title for Takeaway of the Year, and we wish Ship Deck’s success in their future endeavours.
